In an interview, Toni Morrison stated that she was "inspired by her own life as a single mother and a more complex, ambivalent view of "sisterhood" than many in the feminist movement would then allow" when writing Sula. 
Toni Morrison was 42 when she wrote Sula.
Morrison said in an article in the Michigan Quarterly Review,”as ...new world black and new world woman....Daring, disruptive, imaginative, modern, out-of-the-house, outlawed, unpolicing, uncontained and uncontainable.”
